Imagine thousands of runners conquering a 42.2 km marathon through the breathtaking hills of Meghalaya. That's exactly what happened at the Turathon Hills Challenge 2025, an event that's not just a race, but a celebration of endurance, community, and the stunning natural beauty of the region. Held on November 10th under the inspiring theme “Miles on Hills,” the 7th edition of Turathon concluded along the picturesque Jengjal–Bolbokgre stretch of the Tura–Williamnagar highway. Organized by the Tura Runners’ Club, the event saw a staggering turnout, with approximately 2,000 participants across four categories: the full 42.2 km marathon, the 21.1 km half marathon, a 10 km run, and a 5 km fun run. And this is the part most people miss: Turathon is the only long-distance running event in Meghalaya offering a full marathon, making it a unique and prestigious challenge for runners.
Sponsored by the Department of Sports and Youth Affairs, Government of Meghalaya, as part of the nationwide FIT India movement, Turathon has grown significantly since its inception in 2015. Its scenic, pristine, and gently undulating rural route has attracted professional runners from Kenya, Ethiopia, and Nigeria, adding an international flair to the event. This year, the challenge drew energetic participation from across Meghalaya, with notable representation from Jaintia Hills, who left their mark in both the full and half marathon categories. Runners from Assam and various parts of Khasi Hills also joined in large numbers, showcasing the event's growing appeal.
In the men's full marathon, Tlanding Wahlang claimed the top spot, followed by Donboklang Shangoi and Lapynkraw Tabah. For the women, Intromeda R. Marak secured first place, with Martha D. Sangma and Krenitha Ch. Marak taking second and third, respectively. The half marathon saw Daioohimitre Suting winning the men's category with a time of 1:13:58, while Archana K. Marak dominated the women's race, finishing in 1:54:37.
The 10 km and 5 km races also witnessed fierce competition. Marshal Wanniang and Raksilchi A. Marak emerged victorious in their respective men's and women's 10 km categories, while Laichang T. Sangma and Carnida Liana Ch. Momir topped the 5 km races.
